A little bit about
Liz deBeer
Liz deBeer grew up in a suburb of Albany, NY, and now lives on the Jersey Shore, where she writes flash fiction and creative nonfiction. Her novelette-in-flash Farewell to Emptiness is set in Liz's hometown. In April 2026, it'll be available at Thirty West Publishing House.
Her flash has appeared in Bending Genres, Does It Have Pockets, Fictive Dream, BULL, Flash Fiction Magazine, Cosmic Daffodil Journal, Bright Flash Literary Review, Switch, Literally Stories, Literary Garage, and others. Links to these and other published works can be found at her LinkedIn Account and on Posts & Published Pieces via this website.
She's working on several longer works including a novella-in-flash and a chapbook flash collection. A member of SCBWI, AWP, NJCTE, and the Authors Guild, Liz participates in a critique group and classes at Project Write Now, a writing collective dedicated to helping members realize their commercial and artistic potential. Liz periodically writes blog posts for book inc and Brevity Blog, and serves as a volunteer reader for Flash Fiction Magazine.
After earning her BA in English from the University of Pennsylvania, she attended Rutgers University on a full scholarship, earning both an MA in English and an EdD. She began her teaching career at Rutgers as a TA, and continued teaching at the college level for ten years before spending the next decade in a public high school English classroom.
She currently teaches workshops at Project Write Now, a writing collaborative. A member of the New Jersey Council of Teachers of English (NJCTE), Liz wrote many academic articles for The New Jersey English Journal, where she served as co-editor-in-chief for three years.
Liz loves to read and reflect on many authors, including Henry David Thoreau, who valued social justice, non-violent protests, and nature. She believes one person can generate a ripple of hope for others. She's volunteered at many organizations including with Covenant House NJ, an organization that provides sanctuary and support for youth ages 18-21 facing homelessness or human trafficking.
A Lizard's Tale, her weekly substack, reflects on lizards' magic-like traits of renewal & resilience via stories, actions & humor.
When she's not writing, Liz enjoys taking nature walks with her family. Her favorite involves beach strolls and ocean swimming as the endless waves remind her to live in the present.
