A little bit about
Liz deBeer
After earning her BA in English from the University of Pennsylvania, Liz deBeer attended Rutgers University on a full scholarship and earned an MA in English and an EdD. She began her teaching career at Rutgers as a TA, and continued teaching at the college level for ten years before spending the next decade in a public high school English classroom. She currently teaches workshops at a local community college and a writing collaborative.
Liz loves to read and reflect on many authors, including Henry David Thoreau, who valued social justice, non-violent protests, and nature. A member of the New Jersey Council of Teachers of English (NJCTE), Liz wrote many academic articles for The New Jersey English Journal, where she served as editor-in-chief for three years.
Passionate about volunteering, Liz believes one person can generate a ripple of hope for others. She is active in local politics and is a board member of the Asbury Park’s Covenant House, an organization that provides sanctuary and support for youth ages 18-21 facing homelessness or human trafficking.
Liz grew up in a suburb of Albany, NY, and now lives on the Jersey Shore, where she’s working on contemporary YA novels. A member of SCBWI, Liz also participates in a critique group and classes at Project Write Now and book inc, a writing collective dedicated to helping members realize their commercial and artistic potential. Liz periodically also writes blog posts for book inc:.
The plot of Liz’s first manuscript revolves around a high school swimming pool, a familiar setting; Liz was on the synchro swim team in both high school and into college, and later taught water aerobics classes at a local gym.
In her second YA manuscript, a high school senior's angry alcoholic father causes a major car accident, crashing into the relationship of two friends. They consult Anglo Saxon Runes which they found at a garage sale to learn how to navigate forgiveness, love, and life.
Recently, Liz has been writing flash fiction and nonfiction, which has appeared in or is forthcoming in Blue Bird Word, 10 by 10 Flash Fiction, Lucky Jefferson, Sad Girl Diaries, Every Day Fiction, Switch, Libre, and Spillwords. Links to these and many of her other published works can be found at her LinkedIn Account and on Posts & Published Pieces via this website.
When she's not writing, Liz enjoys taking nature walks with her family. Her favorite involves both beach strolls and ocean swimming; the endless waves remind her to live in the present.
